What is an orthodontic emergency?

An orthodontic emergency is anything related to your teeth, jaw, and orthodontic equipment that is causing you severe pain, bleeding, or damage. If you have trauma to the mouth or jaw that is life-threatening, you should go to the emergency room or call 911.

Orthodontic emergencies may include:

  • Broken or loose brackets
  • An archwire that has fallen off or come detached
  • Severe mouth pain
  • Unrelieved soreness
  • Bleeding from a wire or bracket
  • Trauma to the mouth or jaw from impact

Don’t hesitate to contact us if you are experiencing any trouble with your braces or aligners. Sometimes we can give you simple tips to deal with the problem at home. If not, we will set up an emergency appointment for you to come in as soon as possible.

Loose bracket or wire

  • Attach a ball of wax to any wires or brackets that are loose until you can make it to our office.
  • If a bracket or wire comes completely off, put it in a small plastic bag and bring it with you to your emergency appointment.
  • If a wire is too long or causing severe pain, you may be able to clip it with fingernail clippers or use tweezers to twist it back until you come to see us.
  • Use tooth floss to tie a loose wire around your tooth so that it doesn’t jab your gums.
  • You can use the eraser end of a pencil to push pokey wires back into place.
