What is an orthodontic emergency?

Orthodontic emergencies may include:

Broken or loose brackets
An archwire that has fallen off or come detached
Severe mouth pain
Unrelieved soreness
Bleeding from a wire or bracket
Trauma to the mouth or jaw from impact

If you have experienced significant trauma or are bleeding heavily or in extreme pain, please contact your nearest emergency room for assistance. We can help you with fixing your appliance as needed once we know you are safe.

Treating loose brackets or wires

If you are experiencing trouble with your braces, we may be able to help you deal with the problem at home until your next visit. If not, we can set up an emergency appointment to fix your appliance.

If you have loose wires or brackets, you can:

Attach a ball of wax to any wires or brackets that are loose.
Clip long wires with fingernail clippers or use tweezers to twist the sharp edge back until you come to see us.
Use tooth floss to tie a loose wire around your tooth so that it doesn’t jab your gums.
Use the eraser end of a pencil to push pokey wires back into place.

If a bracket or wire comes completely off, put it in a small plastic bag and bring it with you to your emergency appointment.
