Treatments for children and teenagers

At Cool Smiles Orthodontics, we strive to provide children and teens with a strong orthodontic foundation so that they can have a healthy, beautiful smile for life.

Early intervention orthodontics

We like to see children for their first appointment around seven to ten years old. At this initial appointment, we can take a close look at their developing teeth and jaw and see if there are any issues arising. When we catch problems before they are fully developed, we can adjust them more easily and dramatically shorten the orthodontic care they may need as they age.

We realize that visiting the orthodontist can be intimidating for children, which is why our team of specialists works hard to create an environment that is both inviting and comfortable.

Children treatments

Your child may benefit from early intervention treatment if they have:

  • Excessive spacing
  • Crowding
  • Open bite
  • Overbite (deep bite)
  • Crossbite
  • Underbite
  • Overjet (protrusion)
  • Abnormal eruption (tooth growing where it shouldn’t)
  • Thumb sucking
  • Mouth breathing

While crooked teeth, crowding, and misalignments may not seem like a big deal, they can make it more difficult for a child to chew, talk, and even breathe correctly. Any problems left unsolved will only continue to create trouble or get worse as a child ages. Treating their orthodontic problems early reduces the overall time they will need to spend in braces and can help prevent more serious issues from developing.

Invisalign® First

Invisalign® First is a specialized treatment plan designed for children ages six to ten who need early orthodontic treatment. The Invisalign® First system uses a series of clear, plastic aligners that help to guide the developing teeth into their ideal positions. Each aligner is customized to your child’s mouth using 3D digital scanner technology. These aligners can help increase space in the mouth for incoming teeth, correct abnormal gapping, address crooked teeth and misalignments, and more.

Teen orthodontics

Teenagers are the most common age group we see at our offices. This age tends to be the time where teens start to become more self-aware of their appearance and how they are perceived by others. Many parents bring their young teenagers to us to begin treatment in the hopes that they will be free of braces by the time they reach high school. We have many great treatment options for teens that range from traditional metal braces with colored elastics to completely discreet options such as Invisalign® clear aligners.

Metal and clear braces

We offer both metal and clear braces to suit the preferences of our young clients. Both types of braces work the same way, using brackets and archwires to gently straighten teeth and correct abnormalities. Clear braces work well for teens who are concerned about aesthetics or who are often in front of a crowd and want a less visible option. Our metal braces are smaller and more fashionable than braces of the past, and many teens enjoy using fun colored elastics to match their school colors or their favorite sports team.

Invisalign® clear aligners

A popular option for socially-conscious teens, Invisalign® clear aligners offer a virtually invisible teeth-straightening experience. Using advanced 3D imaging technology, an orthodontist will create a highly accurate model of your teen’s teeth and jaw. With this model, a series of clear plastic aligners will be designed to take your teen every step of the way to their stunning new smile. Invisalign® clear aligners are removable during meals which means your teen won’t need to change their diet and will have an easier time maintaining good dental hygiene. Teenagers love that these aligners require fewer office visits and are not noticeable by their friends.
